The Honored Dog Journey
Your relationship with your dog evolves over time.
Creating a Path Forward
Before your dog came home, you probably imagined what life together would look like. Then you met the real dog—with their own personality, preferences, needs, and ideas about how things should go.
That gap between what you expected and what you discovered doesn’t mean something has gone wrong.
It’s often where the relationship begins.
The Honored Dog Journey is a five-phase framework for understanding how the relationship between a dog and their person develops over time. It helps you recognize where you are, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and respond to your dog with greater understanding and intention.
Because understanding changes the relationship—even when your dog doesn’t change.

The Honored Dog Journey
You’re both adjusting.
Bringing a dog home creates change for everyone involved.
You’re learning your dog’s personality, signals, preferences, and needs. Your dog is learning whether this new place, and the people in it, can be trusted.
Some parts of that experience may feel joyful and easy. Others may feel confusing, frustrating, or very different from what you pictured.
The Honored Dog Journey gives you a way to understand the relationship as it develops, not only through training and behavior, but through the expectations, emotions, adjustments, and discoveries that shape life together.
The Honored Dog Journey
Five Journey Phases

Expectation
Before a dog comes home, you begin imagining what life will be like after you bring your dog home.

Discovery
When your dog is home with you, you both will need time to discover who you are in your world together.

Challenge
As expectations meet reality, uncertainty and frustration can surface. Old assumptions may no longer fit.

Belonging
As life becomes more consistent. Trust grows, routines settle, and life together begins to feel like home.

Thriving
Dog and parent move through life as a team, grounded in trust, understanding, and a strong bond.

The Journey isn’t always a straight line.
You and your dog may move forward, revisit an earlier phase, or experience several phases at once. A change in health, routine, home, or family can create a new period of adjustment.
The phases aren’t milestones to complete or a measure of how well you’re doing. They’re a way to recognize where you are and understand what you and your dog may need next.

The HOnored Dog: Personality Profiles
Your dog’s personality is part of the Journey.
A routine that reassures one dog may frustrate another. A busy social life may delight one dog and overwhelm another. The same behavior can mean very different things depending on the dog expressing it.
Understanding your dog’s personality helps you move through the Journey with more realistic expectations, greater compassion, and practical ways to respond. When something has a name, it can stop feeling like a problem and start being recognized as part of who your dog is. Rather than guessing what your dog needs, learn tips and tricks to nurturing your dog by understanding whether they are a Doggy Diva, Goodest Boy/Girl, Bossy Pants, or Social Butterfly.
Meet your dog again.
Most of us meet our dogs twice—first in our imagination and then in our reality.
The Honored Dog Journey invites you to let go of who you thought your dog would be, become curious about who they are, and build a relationship that honors you both.
Love your dog for who they are—not for who you expected them to be.
The Honored Dog offers workshops, relationship sessions, personality profile guides (print/digital versions available) and other resources to help you and your dog navigate your Journey together.
- Discovery Workshop Session: A two-hour session to help you see your dog more clearly and reset expectations.
- Relationship Sessions: One-on-one meetings to help you understand your dog and respond with more confidence.” How do those land?
